Tottenham have agreed a deal worth £85m to sign Portugal international midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United this summer.

The north London club beat off competition from Manchester United, who refused to match the guaranteed fee Spurs were willing to pay.

Unlike many modern transfer deals, the £85m figure contains no add-ons, representing a straightforward and significant financial commitment from Tottenham.

The 21-year-old had been identified as a primary transfer target for Spurs after their £80m bid to sign Sandro Tonali was rejected by Newcastle United.

Tottenham have moved quickly in the summer transfer window, with Fernandes becoming the latest in a string of new arrivals at the club.

Earlier in the window, Spurs secured the free transfer signings of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, defender Marcos Senesi, and Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson once their respective contracts expire on 1 July.

The club also spent £52m to bring Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke to north London from Brighton, strengthening their backline considerably.

Attention then shifted to central midfield, but pursuing Tonali proved difficult given the Italian signed a contract extension at Newcastle to repay the faith shown during his 10-month betting ban.

Fernandes attracted strong interest despite West Ham suffering back-to-back Premier League relegations, with Manchester United and Paris St-Germain among the clubs monitoring his situation closely.

His agent Jorge Mendes held talks with both Tottenham and Manchester United, with the player understood to have kept an open mind about his destination throughout the process.

Manchester United ultimately stepped away from the pursuit, maintaining their position of only buying players at what they consider the correct valuation.

United felt that same stance had paid dividends last season, when they believe patience was rewarded with the right players arriving at the right price.

There were also reported doubts at Old Trafford over whether Fernandes was genuinely committed to joining the club, which contributed to their decision to walk away.

United have already agreed a separate £35m deal with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, though his arrival has been delayed following a late call-up to the Brazil World Cup squad.

Manager Michael Carrick faces a relatively unchanged squad heading into pre-season, with players due to return for training on 9 July and few significant departures or arrivals completed so far.

The plan to sell Manuel Ugarte has been shelved after the Uruguayan midfielder suffered a serious injury while on World Cup duty, further complicating United’s summer planning.
