After Steve Clarke’s shock resignation in the early hours of Sunday, Scotland fans have wasted no time debating who should take charge of the national team.
Clarke stepped down following Scotland’s World Cup exit, with the search for his successor expected to begin imminently amid considerable interest and opinion from supporters.
Ange Postecoglou has emerged as the most talked-about candidate among fans, with several pointing to his knowledge of Scottish football and his record as Australia’s national coach.
Fan Neil believes Postecoglou would be “the perfect fit”, arguing he “would get the players playing with swagger and confidence, and he can be pragmatic when needed.”
Colin echoed that sentiment, calling for a more attacking approach and saying it is “time to leave behind the ‘let’s keep it tight’ philosophy we’ve followed since the 1990s.”
Gordon described Postecoglou as “a serial winner, who knows the Scottish game” and praised his ability to “get his players to score goals” as a key reason to appoint him.
However, not everyone is convinced, with fan Tommy noting that “his recent record is poor” while cautioning that “whatever happens we have to accept this is no quick fix.”
Mark suggested a broader shortlist, proposing Postecoglou alongside Kasper Hjulmand and Jurgen Klinsmann, while also noting Scotland’s favourable position as a Euro host nation.
David Moyes has emerged as the standout Scottish candidate in the eyes of many fans, though his current role at Everton complicates any potential approach.
Sophie urged the Scottish FA to do “everything to ensure David Moyes is the next Scotland manager”, even suggesting an interim appointment if Moyes is not immediately available.
Euan acknowledged the long-running nature of the conversation around Moyes, writing that “it feels like we’ve been calling for Moyes for 15 years but it’s never worked out.”
Eric offered a blunter take, calling Moyes “the only outstanding Scottish candidate” and describing him as “way better tactically and equally as grumpy” as Clarke.
Other Scottish names raised by supporters include Darren Fletcher, Scott Brown, Callum Davidson, Alex Neil, John McGlynn, Steven Naismith, and Neil McCann in various combinations.
Craig described McGlynn as a potential “brilliant left-field option”, suggesting he is “in the same mould as Clarke, but everyone absolutely loves McGlynn-ball.”
Fergus called for a proper recruitment process, arguing that “Scottish coaches are too fearful and pragmatic” and expressing openness to a Scandinavian coach who would “be on the front foot.”
Thomas Frank was also mentioned by fan Gavin as someone who “comes across as knowledgeable and intelligent with a tactical plan that would suit our team.”
With Scotland set to co-host a future European Championship, the pressure to find the right successor to Clarke is significant, and supporters are clearly in no mood for a cautious or rushed appointment.
