Alex Freeman scored his first World Cup goal on Friday to help the United States beat Australia 2-0 and secure their place in the knockout rounds.
The 21-year-old defender is the son of Antonio Freeman, who won the Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers after a standout NFL career in the 1990s.
Remarkably, Antonio Freeman’s career also intersected with Seattle, where his two touchdowns helped the Packers to a win over the Seahawks back in September 1996.
Now, almost 30 years later, the Freeman name is making headlines in Seattle once again, this time on a football pitch rather than an American football field.
“It’s a full circle family moment,” Alex Freeman said after the win over Australia, reflecting on what the achievement means for his family.
“It shows how great the family tree is. It shows he can be great but I can be great in my own way and how amazing it is to have a dad that is successful and can mentor me to be ready for moments like these.”
Antonio Freeman has been seen beaming with pride at USA matches throughout the tournament, following his son every step of the way on this World Cup journey.
The road to this point was not straightforward, with Alex initially keeping his love of football secret, unsure how his father would react given American football’s dominance in the country.
It was his mother and stepfather who first encouraged him to pursue football, with his stepfather also serving as his first coach in the game.
Freeman was playing in the reserves of Orlando City as recently as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, making his current prominence all the more remarkable.
The appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as USA head coach in 2024 proved to be a turning point, with the ex-Tottenham boss building a youthful squad for this tournament.
Freeman was first called up to the national team last year and was an ever-present at the Gold Cup, quickly establishing himself as one of Pochettino’s most trusted players.
“I want to give the credit to the Orlando club and the coaching staff,” Pochettino said, praising the role the club played in Freeman’s development.
“He has an amazing profile, he wants to learn, he always listens. He is a player you really enjoy being with him, not just coaching but is a lovely guy also. He has the potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world.”
Freeman has also captured the hearts of a younger generation after a TikTok post by his stepsister, Diamond Spaulding, went viral just before the USA’s opener against Paraguay.
Diamond posted “My lil brother playing for the US so cheer for #16,” and after Freeman provided an assist in a 4-1 win against Paraguay, the post exploded in popularity.
The nickname “Diamond’s Little Brother” spread rapidly across social media, and following his goal against Australia, some fans have taken things even further, with one person on X writing: “Go Alex !!! We’re hyped about America’s Little Brother!!”
“It shows how I have made it in my way,” Freeman said after Friday’s game, acknowledging the personal significance of the achievement.
“I’ve worked my whole life to be able to get to this moment, to sing the national anthem in front of a home crowd. It just makes me so happy.”
“You don’t know when this chance will come again,” he added, a reminder of just how much this opportunity means to a player who never gave up on his dream.
