Brazil have been dealt a significant injury blow as full-back Wesley is ruled out of the World Cup with a thigh muscle injury sustained in their final warm-up match.
The Roma defender left the field in tears after just 15 minutes of Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Egypt, with scans confirming the severity of the problem.
The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed the diagnosis in an official statement, revealing the full extent of the damage to the 22-year-old.
“The MRI scan revealed a muscle injury to the adductor muscle in his left thigh,” the CBF said in a statement.
“The CBF regrets the injury. Wesley is a player much loved by the squad and will always be considered part of this team as it seeks to win its sixth World Cup title.”
Manchester United-bound midfielder Ederson has been called up as his replacement and will join the Brazil squad in the United States on Monday.
The 26-year-old is expected to complete his move to Old Trafford in early July after United agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta for his services.
Ederson’s call-up comes after a lengthy absence from international football, with his last of three caps coming in March 2025.
Despite the injury disruption, Carlo Ancelotti’s side secured a winning send-off as Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring after seven minutes against Egypt before Endrick sealed the result late on.
Guimaraes, playing in his familiar Newcastle midfield role, tucked a low finish past goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir after catching Mohanad Lashin in possession on the edge of the penalty box.
Egypt drew level four minutes later when Marquinhos underhit a backpass, gifting possession to Mostafa Zico, who drilled a crisp finish into the bottom corner past Alisson.
Brazil regained the lead shortly after half-time when 19-year-old Real Madrid striker Endrick swept Raphinha’s low cutback into the far corner to seal the win.
Ancelotti said he was “satisfied” with the result, adding to Brazil’s 6-2 rout of Panama in Rio de Janeiro the previous weekend.
“I think the team played well, played with intensity, with rhythm, with good organisation, a lot of intensity in the pressing,” the Italian head coach said.
Brazil open their Group C campaign against Morocco on Saturday in New York, before facing Haiti in Philadelphia on 19 June and Scotland in Miami on 24 June.
