Michael Carrick will be tasked with maximising Manchester United’s current resources after being informed that no new signings are planned during the ongoing transfer window.
Sources have indicated the club hierarchy expects the 44-year-old to work exclusively with the squad he has inherited for the remainder of the campaign.
Carrick was officially confirmed as United’s head coach until the end of the season on Tuesday.
His appointment followed the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with Carrick edging out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ruud van Nistelrooy to act as a temporary bridge before a permanent hire in the summer.
Despite a difficult run of results, Carrick will not be backed with immediate reinforcements.
United have won just one of their last seven matches across all competitions, increasing pressure on the new head coach.
However, sources say the club believes short-term fixes would not align with longer-term planning.
Midfield Concerns Acknowledged But No January Action
Club insiders accept that midfield depth remains an area of concern.
Manchester United have been monitoring Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. None of those players are considered realistically available during the current window.
As a result, United are unwilling to pursue stop-gap signings simply to plug gaps.
The focus remains on structural planning ahead of the summer window rather than reactive moves.
Senior figures believe Carrick’s coaching approach can extract more consistency from the existing options.
Returning Players Boost Squad Depth
Confidence within the club has been lifted by a growing injury recovery list. Several first-team players are expected to return to availability in the coming weeks.
Forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are both set to be involved against Manchester City this weekend.
Their return is seen as a significant boost to Carrick’s attacking options.
With most of the squad close to full fitness, United feel they possess sufficient depth.
The club’s internal assessment is that the group can handle the remaining 17 Premier League fixtures.
No Expected Departures This Month
Sources have also downplayed the likelihood of outgoing transfers. Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Kobbie Mainoo are all expected to remain at Old Trafford.
United are keen to maintain squad stability during a transitional period. Carrick’s mandate is focused on results, tactical flexibility, and restoring confidence.
Any major squad changes are expected to be deferred until the permanent managerial appointment is made.
