Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has established himself among the very best players in world football.
Rice has impressed consistently since joining Arsenal in a £105 million move from West Ham in 2023, a transfer that made him the club’s record signing.
Despite the size of the fee, discussion around the price has faded quickly due to his influential performances at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal’s Title Push Gains Momentum
Arsenal enter the second half of the season as strong title contenders after finishing runners-up in the Premier League for two consecutive years.
Mikel Arteta’s side currently hold a six-point lead over Manchester City with 17 games remaining, placing them firmly on course for a first league title in 22 years.
That advantage could have been larger after City dropped points again midweek, though Arsenal were held by defending champions Liverpool for the second time this season.
Keane Praises Rice’s Development
Speaking ahead of that clash, Keane highlighted Rice’s growth and impact since his move to north London.
“He seems a pretty humble guy but he’s also got a bit of confidence about him, you need a little bit of an ego to play for a big club,” Keane said.
“You look at his career and he obviously did a brilliant job for West Ham and now at Arsenal he’s surrounded by better players.”
Keane also noted Rice’s evolving role, adding, “His role has changed a bit, he’s getting forward a lot more.”
“We always thought he had goals in him because his technique is that good and he’s a smart player.”
Recognition From His Manager
Rice’s influence has not gone unnoticed by his manager, who views the midfielder as central to Arsenal’s ambitions.
Asked whether Rice ranks among the world’s best midfielders, Arteta said: “Yes, for me yes.”
“For me the ones that we have are the best. Declan is constantly adding things to his game.”
“He’s constantly adding things to his role in the team.”
“I don’t see where he can stop because he can still improve in a lot of areas and he wants to improve.”
“He’s such a pivotal player for us.”
Consistency Underlines His Importance
Rice has made 131 appearances over the past three seasons and has missed just one Premier League match so far this campaign.
That durability, combined with his leadership and growing attacking output, has cemented his status as a cornerstone of Arsenal’s title challenge.
