Sunderland have completed the signing of Wigan Athletic midfielder Jordi Gomez.
The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder recently won Wigan’s Player of the Season award after a superb season which saw him help Uwe Rosler’s side win the FA Cup and narrowly miss out on promotion to the Premier League.
Those consistent performances had gained interest from a number of Premier League and Spanish clubs, hoping to capture the former Barcelona and Espanyol man on a free transfer.
However, Sunderland have beaten off any potential suitors by completed a three-year deal.
Gomez becomes Sunderland’s second signing of the summer, joining West Bromwich Albion full-back Billy Jones, who also arrived on a free transfer earlier this week.
Gomez made a total of 162 appearances for Wigan Athletic, scoring 28 goals in the process.
