West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has been handed a £20,000 fine by the Football Association following inappropriate tweets on Twitter.

The charge from English football’s governing body relates to Cole’s response to a tweet after West Ham’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Cole wrote “F off you c***”, in reply to the Spurs fan.

An FA statement released on Thursday read:

“The West Ham United player, who was also severely warned as to his future conduct, admitted posting a comment on his Twitter account which was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, in breach of FA Rule E3.”

Cole has since deleted the tweets and issued an apology for his actions.
