Carver wants to repay Newcastle United fans

Caretaker boss John Carver is hoping to repay the travelling Newcastle United fans, who saw their side lose to Leicester City in Saturday’s FA Cup tie.

The Tyneside club installed Carver as caretaker boss earlier this week after Alan Pardew had been released from his contract as manager to move to relegation battlers Crystal Palace.

However, results have not got any better under new management and the fans who travelled to the King Power stadium on Saturday were once again in full voice of their opinions following the 1-0 defeat to Leicester.

The defeat marks the third straight year that Newcastle have exited the FA Cup in the third round, and Carver has held sympathy for the club’s fans.

“Newcastle’s fans should expect better. I’m one of them. I’ve been there with them and I would be the same,” he said on BBC Radio 5Live.

“They travelled all this way having spent a lot of money over the festive period, and they’re entitled to their opinions.

“The one thing as far as I was concerned is that I wasn’t going to let our players leave the pitch before going over and thanking the fans.

“And I was right there at the front, and so I should be because I can take it, I’m a big boy.”
