Everton face fight with Fire for Scottish winger

Everton face a battle with Chicago Fire for the signature of Shaun Maloney of Wigan Athletic, according to Daily Mail.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is keen to spend £500,000 on the Scottish winger, with whom he worked closely with during his time as manager of Wigan Athletic.

Maloney, 31, has been in good form of late for the Championship side and has attracted the interest of a number of Premier League sides and MLS sides, including Chicago Fire, who have made contact with Dave Whelan’s side in recent weeks.

Spaniard Martinez travelled to Glasgow to see Maloney score the winning goal against Republic of Ireland for Scotland during the international break and is now convinced about making a January move.

Maloney’s contract with Wigan expires next summer, meaning he could leave the Latics on a free transfer, but it is understood that he will be allowed to leave for the correct price in January.
