Liverpool identify Balotelli replacement after shirt swap incident

Liverpool are ready to make a summer move for Gonzalo Higuain as they look to replace Mario Balotelli after his failure at the club.

Italian striker Balotelli approached the Champions League game with Real Madrid on Wednesday in poor form and under a wave of heavy criticism after some rather subdued performances.

The former AC Milan star started the game but hauled off at half-time, during which he was captured swapping shirts with Portuguese defender Pepe as they approached the tunnel. His actions have since caused many former Liverpool players, fans and media men to claim that he will be sold either in January or next summer.

And, it is understood that boss Brendan Rodgers has already called for his replacement – Gonzalo Higuain.

Argentine striker Higuain is unwilling to tie himself down to a new contract with Italian side Napoli and has gained interest from a number of Premier League clubs, which Liverpool are keen to be the front-runners of.

Arsenal are also showing interest in the former Real Madrid striker but it is unsure how much funds Arsene Wenger will have to spend in the next transfer window.
