Champions League Review: Chelsea fire six past Maribor, Man City draw

Chelsea fired six goals past Maribor in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, whilst Barcelona beat Ajax at the Camp Nou.

Tuesday’s Champions League action began with Manchester City visiting CSKA Moscow in an early kick-off.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side arrived in Russia in good form and they took a well deserved 2-0 lead into the half-time break thanks to goals from James Milner and Sergio Aguero, who scored his fifth goal in two games.

However, a spirited comeback from the hosts saw Seydou Doumbia and Bibras Natkho rescue a point.

Later in the evening, Porto would beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 after Hector Herrard and talisman Ricardo Quaresma cancelled out Guillermo’s strike for the visitors.

Shakhtar Donetsk were in superb form and created two first half Champions League records as they beat BATE 7-0 away from home. The first of those records saw them become the first side to lead 6-0 at half-time, whilst Brazilian striker Luis Adriano scored four goals in the opening 45 minutes.

In another goal-fest, Bayern Munich became the first side to beat Roma at home in all competitions this season. Pep Guardiola’s side led at the half-time break 5-0 thanks to goals from Mario Gotze, Arjen Robben (2), Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri and Frank Ribery added second half goals in a result which ended 7-1.

Barcelona were in fine form as they beat Ajax at home 3-1 thanks to goals from Neymar, Leo Messi and Sandro Ramirez, whilst PSG secured a late win over APOEL thanks to Edinson Cavani.

Sporting Lisbon lost out to German side Schalke 4-3 in what was Roberto di Matteo’s first Champions League game in charge of his new club.

Finally, Chelsea thumped Maribor thanks to goals from Didier Drogba, Loic Remy, John Terry, Eden Hazard (2) and a Viler own goal.
