Arsenal and van Gaal hold more defender talks

Football Express News understands that Arsenal and Manchester United have held more talks over the transfer of Thomas Vermaelen to the latter.

The Belgian defender has been strongly linked with a move to join Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer, whilst other clubs such as Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan have also shown interest.

Question marks over his future at the Emirates began last season when he lost his place to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

And, it is now looking more and more likely that he will join Premier League rivals United after talks were held on Tuesday evening.

A first bid from United is said to have been rejected by Arsenal officials, but United have told the North London club that they will issue another offer by the end of this current week.

Arsenal have recently signed Calum Chambers from Southampton to strengthen in the defensive area and are understood to be willing to let the former Ajax man leave the club for the right price.
