United legend Neville: Van Gaal has midfield headache

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes the loss of midfielder Michael Carrick to injury represents an early blow to new boss Louis van Gaal’s ambitions for the side.

England international Carrick, who was left out of the Three Lions squad for this summer’s ill-fated World Cup campaign in Brazil, is likely to be sidelined for at least three months with an ankle injury.

His absence further weakens arguably one of the Red Devils’ most lightweight departments, with the lack of proven quality in the centre of the park blamed by many for the torrid 2013-14 season.

They have since added highly-rated Spaniard Ander Herrera to the ranks and are likely to make further acquisitions before the summer transfer window slams shut, but England coach Neville thinks Carrick is tailor-made for van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation.

The ex-defender, who spent his entire career at Old Trafford, said on Twitter: “United to play 3 CB confirmed by LVG.

“Carrick a big blow to be out as he would have been perfect in certain games as the middle 1.

“I just think he has the intelligence to play that role.”

Neville also dismissed suggestions that van Gaal will revert back to a four-man defence when the competitive action begins, having used three in his backline during pre-season.

He added: “Why would he dump it having played 5 games practising it!”
