Liverpool star: We cannot replace Suarez

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has admitted there is no way the Reds can find a player who is good enough to replace talisman Luis Suarez.

Last season’s leading goalscorer has left Merseyside to join La Liga heavyweights Barcelona, leaving behind him a massive void in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Reds have been active in the transfer market and are widely-expected to step up their search for a striker following the collapse of their pursuit of Queens Park Rangers hitman Loic Remy due to a problem with his medical.

However, even if they splash the cash on a new forward, Sterling acknowledges the fact that there is no obvious like-for-like replacement on the market.

He told Sky Sports News: “You can’t really replace Luis – he scored 31 goals last season.

“All I can do is try to contribute to the team. With Daniel Sturridge up front and players like Jordan (Henderson) hopefully we can all contribute goals and help the team.”

Sterling notched the winner in last night’s 1-0 International Champions Cup victory over Olympiacos, after which he admitted he has some way to go before regaining match sharpness.

He added: “I have been away for a few weeks for the summer break and I don’t feel too fit yet but it is getting there.

“I will be getting back to full fitness soon and obviously it was good to get a run out. I have just got to play my normal game like I have been doing.”
