Man United agree terms with Arsenal defender

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 25:

Football Express News understands that Manchester United have agreed terms with Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen over a summer deal.

The Belgian central defender has been strongly linked with a summer move away from Arsenal after falling down the pecking order and Premier League rivals Manchester United have held a long term interest.

Negotiations have taken huge steps this summer between both sides, whilst personal terms have been ongoing since the Belgian international returned to England, following his country’s exit from the World Cup this summer.

United are in need of bolstering their defence after seeing the likes of Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic all leave this summer and new boss Louis van Gaal sees the former Ajax defender as the perfect replacement for the latter.

Vermaelen will be the second Arsenal player to make a summer move to Manchester after French full-back Bacary Sagna swapped North London for Manchester City earlier in June.
