Sunderland are raising money for the families of the two Newcastle United fans who were killed in the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crash.

The Wearside outfit’s SAFC Museum has used social media site Twitter to request retweets in order to donate two shirts to raise funds.

Former Black Cats manager Peter Reid has also been retweeting messages of support.

Near neighbours Newcastle yesterday paid tribute to John Alder and Liam Sweeney after receiving confirmation that the two friends were among the 298 casualties.

The men were on their way to New Zealand to watch the Magpies in their pre-season tour when the aircraft was reportedly shot down by a missile over the Ukraine.

Mr Alder, a 60-year-old from Gateshead, was a familiar figure among Toon fanatics because he always donned a suit when attending matches.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle reported that he only ever missed one game in the last 41 years and travelled to every away match, following his beloved United across the globe.

He is said to have been on his way to the tour with Mr Sweeney, a 28-year-old from Newcastle.

Fellow supporters have already taken to social media sites to pay their respects and urge the club to wear black armbands in their upcoming pre-season matches as a mark of respect.
