Ex-United star: £11m for McCormack a signal of intent

Former England striker Michael Owen believes Fulham have sent out a “signal of intent” by spending £11million to land striker Ross McCormack from Leeds United.

The Scotland international’s mega-money move to west London has sent shockwaves through the second tier of English football, with the Cottagers now widely-tipped to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

They have wasted no time in making a splash following their relegation from the top flight, and left cash-strapped Leeds with little option but to part company with their captain and star striker.

Writing on his personal blog for Sport Lobster, ex-Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United hitman Owen shared his thoughts on the move.

He said: “Signal of intent from Fulham. In the Championship yet spending £11m on a player.”

McCormack, who scored 29 goals for the Yorkshire outfit last season, almost left the club in January when then-manager Brian McDermott was sacked.

The boss was reinstated but has now left on a permanent basis. McCormack shared a close working relationship with the former Reading head coach.

Football Express News understands West Ham United were monitoring the situation closely this summer but opted against a bidding war when the transfer fee exceeded £10m, and they will now pursue other targets.
