According to reports in the Daily Star today, Everton are lining up a bid for Manchester United centre back Jonny Evans.

The 27 year old Evans, has made 131 appearances for the club and is a Northern Ireland international.

The player is in the final year of his contract and could be available for £5 million.

Everton have a history of buying players from United who either were not seeing regular football there or looking for a new challenge in recent years such as Tim Howard, Phil Neville and Darron Gibson.

Roberto Martinez is keen on the player, as end of season has lost Sylvin Distin and Antolin Alcaraz, so needs some reinforcements at centre back to provide support for John Stones and Phil Jagielka, and Evans with a wealth of experience could provide that.

Writers Prediction – HIT. Seems a shrewd bit of business, Evans will hardly get any playing time at United with the Van Gaal revolution going on. He is a decent defender who has played in top matches, so has the experience and still relatively young at 27. If the fee of £5 million is correct, could be an excellent signing.
