Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has dismissed claims that he promised Sir Alex Ferguson that he would join Manchester United in his career.

The German central defender has long been linked with a move away from Dortmund and those reports have now gathered pace as Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal continues to look for a new central defender.

And, whilst admitted last week that he is excited by a potential move to Old Trafford, Hummels has denied that he made promises to former boss Ferguson about a move in 2012.

Writing on his Twitter account, he said: “To be clear: this so called ‘promise’ is completely made up… and that is a friendly expression for it.”

It was reported in January that Hummels, had agreed in principle a move to Old Trafford for the summer, although those reports are yet to be confirmed by either club.

However, talks of a move worth around £35m is now being discussed and Football Express News understands that the defender has spoken to close friends about life in Manchester and the excitement of moving to Old Trafford.

The World Cup winner will fill a huge gap in central defence for United boss Louis van Gaal, who has struggled for consistency in that role after both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand left last summer.
