Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a girl aged 15.
The 27-year-old England international was arrested on Monday and is now in custody, helping Durham police with their inquiries over allegedly having sex with an under-age girl.
“A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16,” said a spokesman for Durham Police. “He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their inquiries.”
Three police cars are understood to have arrived at his home in County Durham on Monday morning to search Johnson’s house.
Sunderland have since confirmed that the former Man City forward has been suspended by the club.
